Journey to the West

Journey to the West

“Journey To The West” 16-19 July – one of China’s most famous literature masterpieces, written by Wu Cheng’en of the Ming Dynasty is based on the legend of Monk Xuanzang as he travels west in search of Buddhist scriptures with his three disciples, Monkey King, Pigsy and Sandy.

This acrobatic rendition of the much-loved folktale is retold in 5 acts. The story unfolds with the irreverent monkey who wreaks havoc in the Heavenly Palace and is subdued by Buddha. Monkey King submits himself to protecting Xuanzang on his journey.

They undergo many sufferings and obstacles along the way. The White Bone Demon, in order to consume the flesh of the monk to gain immortality, changes herself into a maiden, an old lady and an old man to trick the monk. At the Kingdom of Women, the beautiful queen falls in love with Xuanzang and tries to impede his journey by every possible means. Their journey also includes the trap set by Spider Demon, the flames from the fire-covered mountain, the wrath of the Ox Monster and Iron-Fan Princess.

However, these hardships while testing their willpower cannot stop their determination in searching for the Buddhist sutras. Monkey King succeeds in breaking all the traps and protecting Xuanzang and they finally arrive at “Western Paradise” – the birthplace of Buddhism.

Performed by over 80 artists from the Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe of China, the performance won awards for its breathtaking display of dance and martial arts against a backdrop of modern stage technology. Write your comment for this event?

Cinderella on Ice (28 August - 6 Sept ”09)

Monday, July 6th, 2009

The world-famous Imperial Ice Stars, who wowed Singapore audiences and won international critical acclaim with their innovative portrayals of The Sleeping Beauty on Ice and Swan Lake on Ice, are set to thrill once more with a stunning new interpretation of Cinderella on Ice.

Cinderella on Ice has been conceived and choreographed by the award-winning team of Tony Mercer, widely regarded as the world’s leading creator of contemporary theatre on ice, and Evgeny Platov, dual Olympic Gold Medalist and four-time World Champion.

In a novel twist on the classic tale, The Imperial Ice Stars tell the story of Cinderella, a humble chorus dancer who is thrust into the spotlight as a prima ballerina and captivates the Lord Mayor’s handsome son – the most eligible bachelor in town – with her graceful performance.

This sophisticated production boasts lavish sets, opulent costumes, spectacular lighting and stunning special effects including flying, projection, fire and rain.

Nearly 3 million people across five continents, from London to Sydney, Toronto to Cape Town and Moscow to Tokyo, have been swept onto their feet by The Imperial Ice Stars’ adrenaline-infused performances.

The 25-strong cast of World, European and National Championship skaters will dazzle and enthrall you with their daring and skilful feats in a breathtaking display of world-class skating, performed in the intimacy of a frozen theatre stage.

Brought to you by the producers of the sell-out seasons of The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, Cinderella on Ice is a truly spectacular and unique theatrical extravaganza for all ages, and a show not to be missed.
